After a draw in Puerto Rico, the Jacksonville Armada FC (6W-5D-3L, 23 pts, 3rd place NASL Spring) returns home to face Puerto Rico FC (1W-5D-8L, 8 pts, 8th place NASL Spring) Wednesday for Puerto Rican Heritage Night.

Saturday’s match was the first this season between the two clubs, which created a level of unknown at kickoff. As the match wore on, both squads became more aggressive with the ball. Armada FC’s J.C. Banks had the first shot of the match for the Armada FC, resulting in a save by Trevor Spangenberg. The whistle blew for halftime and the scoreboard remained empty.

Puerto Rico emerged in the second half determined to keep the Armada FC from keeping its championship hopes alive. Derek Gebhard’s header in the 48th minute almost gave the Armada FC a lead, but the ball sailed over the net. A few minutes later, a cross from Puerto Rico’s Walter Ramírez was punched away by an alert Caleb Patterson-Sewell and cleared from the box.

With just minutes remaining in the match with a chance to stay alive in the championship hunt, Armada FC Captain Aaron Pitchkolan found the back of the net. The celebration was short-lived though, as the referee whistled a foul on Derek Gebhard and the goal was not recorded.

Despite receiving one point on Saturday, the Armada FC has been officially eliminated from the Spring Season championship contention. The Miami FC dominated the San Francisco Deltas, 7-0, Saturday to secure the Spring title and its place in the playoffs.

The Armada FC looks for three points against Puerto Rico FC Wednesday at Hodges Stadium. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. and the game will be televised locally on This TV Jacksonville and nationally on ESPN3.
